How to Clean Gold Plated Chain
Gold plated jewellery has a very thin layer of gold applied over a metal like silver, copper or brass. It is less expensive as compared to actual gold jewellery, but has a good shine and look to it. However, the bad thing about gold-plated jewellery is that the thin gold layer wears of quite quickly, if not handled properly. Since gold-plated jewellery is so delicate, you should be extra careful when cleaning it.
Things Required:
– Liquid Detergent
– Water
– Baking Soda
– WD-40
– Bowl
– Cotton cloth
– Paper towel
– Soft bristled toothbrush
Instructions
-
1
Wipe the surface dust and any loose grime off your gold plated chain by cleaning it gently with a damp cotton cloth.
-
2
Take a medium size mixing bowl and fill it with warm water (lukewarm not hot). Add one table spoon of liquid dish detergent to it and mix well to make a soapy solution. Make sure you use a dish detergent that does not leave a film.
-
3
Place the gold plated chain in this soapy solution and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
-
4
Take the chain out of the water and soap mixture and gently scrub it using a soft bristled tooth brush. Focus on the hard to reach areas (if any) of your chain.
-
5
Rinse off the soap by holding the jewellery under running water for almost a minute.
-
6
Pat dry the chain immediately using a paper towel or clean cotton cloth to avoid water stains.
-
7
To restore the shine of the gold, rub your gold plated chain gently with a polishing cloth made for polishing gold. Never use an abrasive polishing cloth on your gold plated jewellery, it will remove the thin gold layer, or at least leave scratches on your jewellery.

Baking soda
You can also use baking soda to clean your gold plated chain. Apply the baking soda to a soft bristled toothbrush and gently scrub the chain. Wash the chain thoroughly under running warm water to rinse off baking soda and the dissolved grime. Again, use a toothbrush to clean hard to reach areas. -

Tarnished jewellery
If your gold plated chain is tarnished, just spray a small amount of WD-40 and let it sit for 3 to 5 minutes. Rub the spot gently using your finger tips and rinse under clean water. Pat dry immediately to avoid mineral deposits from water.
