How to Color Using the Side of a Pencil

You may not know this but it is possible to use the paint on the outside of the pencil to leave marks on a piece of a paper. Using the side of a pencil can prove to be an excellent alternative to crayons or coloured pencils. Depending on the quality different brands will give different results but it usually works very well. Therefore, if you are looking to shade a drawing to capture the darkest dark and the lightest lights and the grey areas in between, you should learn to shade a pencil.

    It is advised to your graphite, charcoals and coloured pencils to successful shade a drawing. You can also use tools to enhance the shading effects. Firstly, you will be required to choose a paper that has a rough tooth.  Usually, the rougher the paper, the greater will be the tooth. Quality of the paper can have a great impact on how the shading of your drawing looks eventually. Therefore, it is recommended to use best quality paper for better results. Before drawing anything, consider comparing different kinds of papers. By doing this, you will learn how each paper responds to pencil shading.

    Hold the pencil and move it in the direction that best helps describe the project. For an instance, if you are shading a cricket ball, you will need to move your hand in a circle. Similarly if you are shading a rectangular object, you will be required to move your hand up and down to make sure it is shaded with vertical strokes.

    Making hatch marks is a recommended practice. These lines are parallel to one another and they create the illusion of shading. If you want to have a darker shade, consider placing these lines close to each other. Maintain some distance between the hatch marks for lighter shading effects.
