How to Configure Windows Server as A NTP Server

Network Time Protocol (NTP) is an internet protocol that is used for transfer of accurate time to all systems at the same time. However, you will have to configure the windows server as an NTP to achieve the goal. The Windows 2000 and onward has this option built in. Although the process of enabling an NTP server is not that difficult, you might get stuck without following certain steps. It is nevertheless a fundamental requirement in Windows-based networking to authenticate timing of process of all information, especially communication messages.

    Finding of Sub-keys

    First of all you have to find sub-keys. To do that you click on the start tab on the extreme left of your task bar and then type the word 'regedit' in the run box and click OK. To find the NTP service type.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpServer\

    Then click on the 'enabled' button in the right section of the window panel that will pop up after clicking the enabled tab. Then click on the 'modify' tab and in the 'Edit Dword' value box type the digit of '1' under the value data and click 'OK'.

    Locate Second Sub-Key

    Once you have modified value in the first box, find another sub-key by typing.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters\NtpServer

    This will again pop up another window pane. In the right section, click on the NTP server and then click 'modify'. In the 'Edit Dword' value box type Domain Name System (DNS). Each DNS must be unique, otherwise change will not take effect.

    Location of Third Sub-Key

    You will have to locate the following key by typing.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\TimeProviders\NtpClient\SpecialPollInterval

    In the right pane, click 'SpecialPollInterval' and then click 'modify', and then in the value box type number of seconds you want for each poll. For example type 900 for each poll, and then at the end click 'OK'.

    Configuring of Time Correction Settings

    To configure the time correction settings you will need to access following key by typing.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\config

    This will again pop up a window pane. In the right section of the pane click on the tab 'MaxPosPhaseCorrection' and click on 'modify' and in the Edit Dword value box type the number of seconds. For example, type 3600 seconds for an hour and then click 'Ok'.

    Again, access the following key by typing.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\config

    Then in the popped up window pane click on 'MaxNegPhaseCorrection' and click on the 'modify'  and in the Edit Dword value box click on the 'decimal' and type number of seconds i.e. 1800 for 30 minutes, and click 'OK'.

    Exiting Editor

    Your job is almost done and you have successfully configured your NTP server. To restart windows time server, click on the start tab, in the extreme left corner of your system, on the task bar and then click on the 'run' box and click 'OK' after typing following.

    - net stop w32time && net start w32time

    This will show you your NTP server up and functioning properly.
