How to Conquer fear of Flying

Aviophobia or fear of flying is a general problem especially for those who do not travel frequently. Their legs start shaking, heartbeat increases and body start sweating immediately after realising that they will have to get on a plane.

If you are one of those then you need to learn how to conquer this fear of flying. Do not worry, you won’t have to attend an institution for this purpose. Remember, it’s all about controlling your mind. If you do that you can soar above your fears and limits.

    Do some research:

    First of all you need to do some research and find out the stats. You will notice that travelling by air is lot safer than any other medium. Yes, there were many woeful incidents of air crashes in the past but the question arises what is the actual percentage of such incidents. Try to be rational and face the facts.

    Most of times, people are scared just because they do not know what to expect. If you know that there can be turbulence due to rough air pockets or you may feel dizzy because of height and speed of the plane then you can overcome the fear of flying to a significant extent.

    Try to find the answers of questions like why plane goes so fast? Why your ears are popping? Why the plane is not flying smoothly? Believe me; all these questions have logical answers that will satisfy you.

    Control your thoughts:

    Another way to overcome the fear is to control your thoughts. Sit down on your seat, fasten your belt, close your eyes and try to meditate. This meditation will really help you in taking your mind off of your fears. Think of something really pleasant and divert your thoughts.

    Even if you are out of control, do not pretend to be normal. You cannot deceive yourself. Sometimes, acceptance gives you the courage to conquer the fear. Challenge yourself by getting on the plane with all these fears and you will see that flying is no more threat for you.

    You may ask your doctor to suggest some medication to overcome your anxiety. You may use alcohol but being drunk is not the best choice.

    Bring something to keep yourself engaged:

    You can distract yourself by playing games, watching movies or listening to your favourite music playlist.
