How to Create a Festive Mardi Gras Wreath

Literally translated as “Fat Tuesday” from French, Mardi Gras is a festival that marks the celebrations before the penitential season of Lent, which includes fasting and other religious activities. Featuring carnivals, parades, dances, feasts, and extravagant events, Mardi Gras is celebrated with great gusto in a variety of countries, all of which have their own special traditions for the day. A great way to celebrate the day is to make a festive Mardi Gras wreath to hang on your door, to mark the special occasion.

Things Required:

– Wire wreath frame
– Several branches of greenery (about 8-10 inches long)
– Floral wire
– Hot glue gun
– Mardi Gras decorations (masks, beads, feathers, coins, etc.)
– Old newspapers

To begin, spread old newspapers onto a flat working surface, where you will be creating the wreath. Now, lay the wire wreath frame down on top of the newspapers. This can be a traditional round frame, but since Mardi Gras is all about crazy celebrations, you could also go for a different idea, like a diamond-shaped wreath, which could be difficult but a lot of fun to make. If you are unable to obtain a wire wreath frame, simply twist a coat hanger into the shape you desire, and leave the hook at the top intact, to serve as a means of hanging the wreath.

Now, start arranging the greenery on the wire wreath frame, and tie it on securely with the floral wire. You can do this by attaching one branch at a time, or layering them all on to create the look you want, and then securing the whole thing with floral wire. For a Mardi Gras wreath, you can go for branches that aren’t entirely green – bright red, or yellow branches could also be a fun idea, or you could mix and match several colours.

Once all the branches have been secured, and the wreath is in the form and style you want, you can begin adorning it with your choice of Mardi Gras decorations. Carnival masks are a Mardi Gras fixture, so instead of attaching a large bow to the top of the wreath, consider attaching an extravagant mask. Mardi Gras beads are also a part of the festivity, so twine some strings of beads through the wreath, and stick large feathers in various spots, in Mardi Gras colours like purple and gold. You can also use a hot glue gun to attach Mardi Gras doubloons, or coins, to various parts of the wreath, as a finishing touch.
