How to Deal with Insults from Friends

Some people derive real pleasure out of tormenting their friends. This is either because they themselves feel insecure, or they want to stamp their authority over you. Being on the receiving end of insults is never pretty. Just because they are your friends does not mean you have to endure their insults, which is why is it important to know how to make them stop.

Instructions

  • 1

Politely ask them to cut out the insults. If you remain silent or do not express your dissatisfaction, your friends may not realise that their words are actually hurting you. The very fact that they are your friends is a good enough reason for you to be open and frank to them about not liking a particular action of theirs. Do not become too aggressive while expressing your dissatisfaction though, as that could ruin your relation with them.

If you sense yourself getting close to the tipping point, distance yourself from the friends that insult you for a while and instead prefer to remain in the company of the friends that do not have the habit of hurling hurtful words at you. This will allow you to regain your calm and self-esteem.

Nobody can insult you unless you allow them to. If your friends start insulting you, just give them a shut up call through your expression. If they react negatively to this, maybe you were wrong about them being your friends.

Words cannot harm you unless you yourself allow them to affect you. Do not react when someone insults you. When your friends fail to get any reaction from you, they will see no point in continuing with the insults and therefore stop.

Sometimes, your friends may insult you for being someone that you are not. While becoming defensive is a natural reaction in such scenarios, you can handle the insults by diffusing them through sarcastic role-play of that someone wildly. This may lead your friends to realise their mistake and make them apologetic.

If your friends target your intelligence, do not start making an extra effort to prove yourself as someone smart. Instead, simply laugh at it and tell them that you really cannot help it if they feel this way. Keep your head high and voice confident.
