How to Do a Guillotine in Mixed Martial Arts
The guillotine choke, which is also known as Mae Hadaka Jime in judo, is a very effective chokehold in martial arts and wrestling, thus making it a regular feature in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). It involves a person moving in on his opponent, sliding his arms around the latter’s neck, pulling him down, wrapping his legs around his opponent’s waist and then squeezing the arms to shut off the air from the lungs. The grapple move depends on a number of things for successful execution, which include swiftness, strength and training.

1
The first thing that you need to do is to close in on your opponent. Remain on your toes as you look for an opportunity to close in on him. Remember, your opponent will also be looking for an opening to capitalise on, which is why it is extremely important that you do not let your defence down while getting yourself in position to pull off the grapple. Remain patient and closely observe his movements. The moment you see an opening, move into position.

2
Once you have closed in on your opponent successfully, swiftly move to the side opposite of your dominant hand. If you are right-handed, you will be moving to the left slightly. If you are left-handed, move slightly to the right. By getting in this position, you will basically prepare yourself to lock your opponent your opponent. It will give you an ideal balance and position to do the remaining motions and actions for a successful guillotine.

3
Place your arm behind the head of your opponent after moving up against him for the slide. If you have done this correctly, the neck of your opponent will be cupped in your armpit. You will need to be really quick, as your opponent is bound to try to push your arm away.

Now perform the wrap by wrapping your arm around his neck, bringing your forearm right against his windpipe. You have him right where you want him. However, in order to ensure that he does not manage to free himself from the wrap, tighten your hold by grabbing the wrist of your dominant hand with your opposite hand.

5
Now push your body down towards the ground in sitting position, while pushing your opponent down with you. With your arms still wrapped around his neck, wrap your legs around his waist. Push your away from him to exert more force.

6
Squeeze your dominant arm into his throat to cut off his air.
