How to Do a Short Pass in Soccer

Playing a perfect short pass has become a norm in modern day football. All this started from the total footballing philosophy which was introduced by the Dutch team back in the early 1970’s. This footballing philosophy died out as time passed, but the Spanish giants, Barcelona, while performing under their coach, Josep Guardiola, were able to bring it all back. With the help of short passing, they were able to renew total football, where each and every player could fit into all the positions on the pitch.

In order to play a short pass, you must know where to pass from. There are certain ways through which you can play a pass. Either you can use your toe, your outer foot, or the flatter side of your foot.

To play a pass from the flatter side of your foot, simply see your team-mate and use the inner side of your foot to direct the ball in his/her direction. This can become difficult if you wait too much. Therefore, never wait before you make a pass.

In order to perfect short passing, you must not wait for the other team’s player to pressurize you, or there is a high possibility that you will end up making a wrong pass.

A toe poke, or passing the ball with the help of your toe, is used whenever you want to pass the ball straight. If you have less time and you think that you cannot use the inner side of your foot to pass the ball to your team-mate, you can simply use your toe. Simply knock the ball with your toe and direct it towards the player who you think should receive the ball. This will require lesser time and energy as a toe poke can make the ball travel faster as compared to the inner side of your foot.

In order to play a short pass from the outside of your foot, you will have to practice a lot. This can be used if you want to pass the ball to a player who is on the opposite direction. A few players would use their weaker foot to pass the ball to the player standing on the other side, but there’s a high possibility that you might misplace a pass. Therefore, simply use the outside of your foot to direct the ball towards your team-mate.
