How to Do the Horse Stance in Kung Fu

Horse stance, which is also known as the ‘horse riding stance’, is used in different types of martial arts. In Kung Fu, a horse stance is a firm, strong and stable position, through which other stances can be formed very swiftly. By looking at a person in a horse stance, you will get an impression as if he/she is riding an imaginary horse. This stance allows you to focus on the movements of your opponent and keeps you prepared to defend yourself or attack at the right time. Your body however, should have enough agility to form a horse stance.

    Stance

    In order to form the horse riding stance, you need to begin with your feet hips width apart. Planting your feet on the ground firmly is the key behind an effective horse stance. Your knees should be marginally bent to help proper flow of blood; whereas, the back should be straight. Place your arms sides down or bend the elbow. However, make sure that the fists are forward and up.

    Length between feet

    Move your left foot to the side in order to ensure that your feet are shoulder length apart. The back must stay straight and arms in a ready position. It is crucial for the balance of your body in such a posture.

    Lower your stance

    Lower your stance by sitting on an imaginary chair. It is important to exhale while you move into the sitting position. Your back should remain straight even in this position but the knees should be bent in a 90 degree angle.

    Feet positioning

    Some people do not feel comfortable placing their feet straight forward. In such a scenario, you can move your feet at a 45 degree angle to the side. For beginners, the 45 degree angle is highly recommended.

    Distribution of weight

    The balance of your body is absolutely vital in a horse stance. You have to make sure that the weight is equally distributed on both the feet.

    Breathing

    Breathing in the horse stance is very important. You should inhale deeply through the nose, filling your core to an extent that the chest and stomach expand as a result. Exhale through your mouth.When you are done with the stance, move up slowly into a ready stance, instead of jumping up.
