How to Draw a Face Using an Ink Pen

It is not easy to draw a face using an ink pen. The art of using the lines creatively and using the pen to draw and shade the different features may sound like a very easy thing to do, but anyone who has actually sketching a face using a pen would know very well that it is really tough. However, there are certain measures and guidelines that a person can follow to successfully sketch a face. A bit of practice and effort will make the face drawn using an ink pen even better.

The first thing that you need to do is to sketch the outline of the face with a lead pencil, preferable a light one. Drawing the outline will help you by giving you a reference point that can be used to judge where the features of the face should be placed. Use dotted lines to specify the shape of the hair that falls on the forehead and also allow you to determine the hairline. Using a pencil in this phase is strongly recommended because you will surely find yourself making a few mistakes while drawing. You will be able to conveniently correct the mistakes by using a rubber. Be careful not to press the pencil too hard while drawing as it will make it tougher to rub it later. Also make sure you do not use the rubber too vigorously, as it may cause the paper to tear.

Once you have drawn the outline of the face and the hairline, turn your attention to the eyes. Decide whether you want to go for the typical oval eyes, or if you want round or slanted eyes. Once you have made the decision, draw them carefully. Remember to draw the pupils as well. Leave the shading for later.

Sketch the nose. The placement of the nose will be no trouble since you have already sketched the eyes. You will obviously place the nose between the eyes. Keep the contours of the nose in mind while sketching it. Be careful not to make it too long or too fat, unless that is exactly how you intend to draw it.

Move on to sketching the mouth after getting done with the nose. Again, the placement of the mouth will become pretty easy because of sketching the nose first. Shaping the lips can be a bit tricky, but you do not have to worry too much about it, since you can rub them if you do not get them right first and start over again.

Once you are done sketching the face and its features, take a long and hard look at it to ensure that everything is as you want it to be.

Now go over the pencil lines with an ink pen. Do not rush anything. Take your time.

  • 7

Use the pencil to shade the eyes and the hair.
