How to Drill a Driven Point Well

It is extremely important to use an appropriate technique of drilling a driven point well, in order to obtain clean water for drinking and household use. When pumped continuously, the volume of water drops as you go deeper, which is the reason why most pumps are able to lift water down to approximately 25 feet only.

If the water table (surface where the water pressure head is equal to the atmospheric pressure) is within 10 to 25 feet of the surface and the land is sandy, you can easily drill a driven point effectively.

Things Required:

– 3 to 5-foot-long sand point
– Four sections of 5-foot-long pipe with a 2-inch diameter
– Special drive couplings and a drive cap
– Post hole digger
– A pipe driver
– A hand pump

Instructions

  • 1

    Visit a hardware store

Before you drill a driven point well, it is important for you ensure that you have all the above mentioned things. If you do not have any of these items, visit a hardware store in your locality and buy the missing things.

  • 2

    Drive the pipe down

In order to drill a starter hole where you want the driven point well to be located, you would have to use the post hole digger.

You can start to drive the pipe down as soon as the hole is 3 to 4 feet deep.

  • 3

Attach the pipe to the sand point

Place the pipe cap on the open end of the pipe, after attaching it to the sand point with one of the drive couplings. The length of the pipe should be 5 feet.

Use two pipe wrenches while making the connections and put joint compound on the coupling connection.

  • 4

    Drive the point

You need to drive the point, using a motorised pipe driver or a sledge hammer. Take the drive cap off when only 4 to 5 inches of pipe is left above the ground. Now you need to attach another pipe with a drive coupling.

Until the water table is 5 to 10 feet, you should keep driving down by adding pipes. You can strike a narrow pole down to check the depth of the water.

  • 5

    Install a hand pump

In order to clear the well pipe of sand and dirt, you can install a temporary pitcher pump or hand pump on the pipe. Until the water starts to run clear out of the pump, you need to hand pump.

  • 6

    Motor driven suction

Purchase and install a motor driven suction pump according to the capacity and size of the driven point well.
