How to Enter a Calf Roping Competition

Over the years, calf roping competitions have gained popularity and now are one of the most competitive events in a rodeo. You may have practised calf roping for a while now and it may be time for you to compete in a proper calf roping event but there are certain prerequisites that you need to take care of. It really does not matter if its a local or a national event that you plan to enter, the prerequisites are more or less the same.

    Become a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). If this would be your first calf roping competition, you will need to acquire a PRCA permit so take care of that as well. A PRCA permit will make you eligible for entry in a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo.

    Normally, calf roping competitions are held in a full rodeo competition. There are thousands of rodeo events held across the US every year. Choose a rodeo competition that suits your schedule. You may want to check the PRCA website for upcoming rodeo events

    Once you have selected a rodeo competition, you will have to complete an application form and a few other forms and submit them to PRCA. Make sure that you submit the required forms before the deadline; otherwise you may not get a place in the calf roping event.

    In most cases, you will be required to pay a nominal entry fee. PRCA collects the entry fee from all participants in order to reward the winner with prize money.

    Calf roping rules are generally the same for every event but there may be rules specific to the event in which you are going to take part so make sure that you get a copy of these rules if applicable and understand them properly.

    Before the calf roping event, you need to be prepared mentally. Practise as much as you can and make sure that you have all the necessary equipment at your disposal. You will need a lariat and a pigging string. Also, make sure that roping saddle you put on your horse is stronger than normal saddles because the saddle will have to bear more strain in a roping event than normal.

    Make sure that your horse is in good shape and is properly trained. Remember that you may suffer an injury if the horse you ride in a calf roping competition is ill trained.
