How to Experience Mardi Gras in Rural Louisiana
After hearing “Mardi Gras”, the only thing that comes into mind is New Orleans, home to large parades and big city celebrations during the Carnival season. However, one cannot associate Mardi Gras only to New Orleans, as it is celebrated in many rural areas of Louisiana too. During the Mardi Gras, or Carnival season, rural areas are full of festivities and other interesting activities.

Mardi Gras parades are the most exciting part of he entire season. Almost every town in Louisiana arranges Mardi Gras parade during the Carnival season. You may not find the parades as big as those held in New Orleans, but, you can still enjoy watching the available show and its different facets.

You can also be a part of the chicken run. During the chicken run, you will have to go door to door, along with some other local people, and ask the residents to provide you with money or ingredients for chicken and sausage gumbo.
To participate in the chicken run, you will have to dress in Mardi Gras costumes. You may be required to ride a horse while collecting ingredients or money for chicken and sausage gumbo. At the end of the run there is a gumbo for everyone to enjoy. -

Mardi Gras trail rides are very popular in rural areas. In it, you can ride a horse or a flat-bed trailer pulled by a truck. Some trailers are equipped with barbeque pits and portable toilets. Lots of Mardi Gras decorations and costumes are used during these trail rides.

You can also attend a Mardi Gras ball, which is also arranged in the smaller towns. The theme for Mardi Gras ball changes each year. In this event, people can dress up in formal clothing, or can choose to dress up according to the particular theme chosen for the year.

You can also join townspeople on Fat Tuesday, in order to spend your time in different parties and festivities. If you love to Cajun food, music and dancing, you will find them all in Mardi Gras festivities.
