How to Field Dress a Hog

Wild boar is a dangerous but delicious animal. In most cases, small hogs are the best bet for the table. Skinning and field dressing is extremely important if you want to eat a wild boar. Let the pig dangle for a while after skinning and gutting and allow the carcass to dangle for as long as possible. Hogs are difficult to skin when compared to other wild animals such as buffaloes and deer. If you are looking to field dress a hog by yourself, you will be glad to know that the steps involved in the process are easy.

Before doing anything else you will need to make sure you have what it takes to successfully field dressing a wild boar. Once you have made up your mind, consider setting out water and sponges for clean-up after dressing the wild hog. If you're dressed in a long-sleeved coat or jacket, take it off to avoid creating a mess.

Make a round cut around the hog's rectum with a knife. Cut strong into the hips until the rectum is free. If the hog is a male, cut off the male organs and testes and cut the urethra close to the rectum. If it's female, it is recommended to include the genitals when removing the anus. This area will allow you to access the pelvic area starting when the hog’s digestive system is removed.

Now create a little slit in the hog’s stomach walls, being cautious not to chip the digestive system. Perform this task gradually, taking the abdominal walls out and reducing with the knife blade. Slit the stomach walls from the end of the rib cage to the hips. Be sure to take your time while doing this procedure.

Split the rib cage by reducing off to the side of the breast bone if the wild boar is little. Continue the process of cutting as far up the throat if possible. If the boar is huge, it will be difficult for you to split the rib cage. If you are unable to perform this task by yourself, ask a friend to help you out.

If the boar is too big, continue the cut over the rib cage by reducing just the epidermis. It is recommended to continue cutting deeply next to the windpipe once you cut past the rib cage. If possible, cut high up to the neck.
