How to Fight a Traffic Ticket

Driving a car in any part of the world requires you to follow a set guide of rules and regulations. Anything from over speeding to cutting into the other lane without giving an indicator could result in you being handed down a major ticket. In most parts of the United States and Canada, there can be some hefty fines for traffic violations, that sometimes go up to even $500.

A ticket normally results when you are on the wrong side, but sometimes, you may be handed down the ticket despite it not being your fault. Whatever the cause may be, it is worth fighting a traffic ticket and you definitely have the right to do so.

    Hearing

Since you obviously do not want to pay for the ticket, you will have to put up a fight. This can be done by checking out the back of the ticket, which lists all the options you can use, as listed by law.

This could be anything from having to go to the courtroom in person and filing an appeal or doing so with a traffic divisional head.

In most situations it is dealt by the court of law and hiring a lawyer may also be advised to pursue your case. That can however also be done by the person him/herself.

  • 2

    Preparation

Like any other case in court, you have to come prepared and do not expect that you will be able to make a movie-like emotional speech on the spot and impress the judge. There are a lot of cases that they deal with on a daily basis, so keeping it short and to the point should be the consideration here.

Getting any sort of evidence that can strengthen your case, and reference of past precedents of people under the same situation having won, is a good idea to show your innocence in the court of law.

  • 3

    Technicalities

It is important to see whether the police officer who handed out the ticket, did any blunders on his part. This could be on the ticket itself like missing the officer’s signatures or not properly putting his badge number on it. These are some solid ways to get the case decided in your favour, putting the officer on the grill.

  • 4

    Speak

Most importantly, when the hearing time does come around, be confident and speak up when you get the chance. In many cases, the concerned officer does not even show up, which will most likely force the judge to give a ruling in your favour.
