How to Fill Out an I9 Form

The ability to fill out paper work is a must in today’s world. Wherever we go, there is always some kind of paper work that needs to be filled before we get a service.

Same is true when it comes to employment. The government requires both the employer and the employee to fill out an Employment Eligibility Verification Form, also known as the I-9. You must fill it on the first day of your employment otherwise there can be certain issues that can be created. Filling it out right is important and can be easily done without much trouble.

    Your Section

    As an employee, you will be required to fill section 1 of the form on the first day of your employment before the end of the day. Include all your particulars in the form which are required and once you have completed the section, sign the form in the designated area.

    Fill in Appropriate Citizenship Status

    This is an important thing to do. If you are a citizen than you will obviously be ticking that box. However, if you are a citizen of another country living as a permanent resident or a student who is allowed to work for certain number of hours, be sure to state your status correctly. If you fill it in wrongly, it can create problems for you later on.

    Proof of Identity

    You are required to provide two proofs of identity along with the filled form. It is generally you’re State ID card or driver’s license and the social security card. You will need to show the originals and provide the employer with the copies to file with the forms. In case you do not have an id card or a driver’s license yet, you can use your passport for the same purpose.

    Translator’s Section

    If you have problems with filling out the form yourself due to trouble with language proficiency, you can get it prepared from someone else but make sure that the person fills in the section designated for him or her as the preparer. This is important and make sure you get that area filled as well.

    Employer’s Part

    Your part is now done. The employer will now fill his or her section and file in the form to the related authorities. Make sure that you do it if the local laws require you to do so.
