How to Fix a Kitchen Faucet Aerator

A non-defective aerator is extremely important for the proper functioning of the faucet, especially in the kitchen. It is hard to tolerate an uneven stream of water while working in the kitchen. A faulty aerator not only makes it difficult to wash crockery or vegetables, but also turns the entire counter into a messy place.

The kitchen faucet aerator works differently from other normal aerators, as its main duty is to reduce the flow to conserve water. With time, the aerator screen starts collecting deposits of dust. As a result, the aerator stops working properly.

– Masking tape
– Bowl
– White distilled vinegar
– Toothbrush

    First of all, you need to cover the sink drain with its cover. Since the aerator consists of a few tiny parts, you cannot afford them to drop down the drain.

    Keeping an old towel nearly is also important. The aerator screen and disks may crack after falling from your hands. Therefore, you need to lay a relatively softer surface to avoid any damages. The towel will also help you prevent the kitchen counters form getting all messed up.

    Remove the aerator very gently with the help of a wrench or pliers. The aerators used in kitchen faucets are not tightened too much. So, you may be able remove it even with your hand. Turn the aerator clockwise to remove.

    If using pliers, you should wrap a masking tape around the edges of the aerator. This will ensure that you don’t damage its shine and finish.

    After removing, put the aerator in a bowl with at least half inch of distilled white vinegar. Let the aerator pieces stay in the bowl for an hour at least. The vinegar will surely remove all hard water and mineral deposits.

    It is the time to scrub the aerator screen with an old toothbrush. You can sprinkle a little baking soda over the screen, if it is too dirty. The main objective is to get rid of all the dust deposits. Using a pin to poke out the dust is another effective method.

    Once the aerator is completely cleaned, reattach it by turning the pliers anticlockwise. Turn on water supply to see if it is working properly.
