How to Freeze Fresh Herbs

For anybody that loves to cook, there is nothing better than having a variety of fresh herbs available in the offseason. Many different herbs only grow during a certain time and preserving them while they are fresh is a relatively easy task. Using a simple technique and a few items available in your home, you can easily freeze fresh herbs to use in your recipes later.

Things Required:

– Freezer Bags
– Ice Cube Tray
– Knife
– Water
– Marker

Instructions

  • 1

Take out the various herbs that you want to freeze and carefully wash each one under running water. Make sure to take your time and clean your herbs properly. You do not want to freeze your fresh herbs if they are dirty or contain any insects.

  • 2

Once you have rinsed off all the herbs, take a sharp knife and cut off all of the large stems from your fresh herbs. Make sure that you leave the short stems, as these are usually chopped up and consumed.

  • 3

Now take your fresh herbs and use the knife to chop them all up. Remember to keep each herb separate from another so you don't mix them all up. Make sure you finely chop your fresh herbs, as this will help retain their flavour.

  • 4

After you have completely chopped all of the fresh herbs, take the ice cube tray and start putting each herb inside it. Make sure to push them down so that the herbs get properly packed inside the ice cube tray. Once you have finished placing your fresh herbs in the ice cube tray, use some water to cover it. Be careful not to mix all the herbs with the water however.

You will now have to place the ice cube tray in the freezer for around 24 hours to make sure everything solidifies properly. Periodically check the cubes to make sure that they are properly frozen.

  • 6

Once the cubes are frozen, remove the tray from the freezer and gently remove each herb cube. Now place each fresh herb cube in separate freezer bag and use a marker to properly label them. Make sure to put the date on the freezer bag as well.

You can repeat these steps with different fresh herbs as you fill different freezer bags with frozen cubes. Properly seal the bags and place them in the freezer for future use. You can use this method to freeze a whole variety of different fresh herbs quite easily.
