The first step you should take is have a proactive defence system such as an antivirus installed on your computer. There are a number of free and paid antivirus programs available on the internet like AVG, Symantec, Avast, Mcafee, Kaspersky etc. You can install the one which suits you the best, as all of them provide good defence system.

If your computer is infected by a virus then it is suggested to use another system to download a copy of the antivirus and then burn it on a storage media such as CD/DVD or flash drive. Now install the antivirus program in the infected system with help of the storage media you have created.

Once you are done with the installation, see the antivirus program’s documentation and perform a full system scan which can take sometime to complete and at the end, will present you with the results and reports of the viruses detected and removed.

Once all the scanning and installation is completed, log in to all of your web accounts such as emails and social networking websites and change your passwords and turn on the spam filters in your email settings.

Also configure your antivirus software in such a way that it automatically performs a scan after successive intervals of time. You can do this in the configuration menu of your antivirus program.
