How to Get Sleep With a Newborn

Newborns babies sleep upto 16 or more hours per day. That sounds good on the surface, but the problem is that they sleep in small periods, creating a sleep disorder for the parents, especially mothers. This can result in a lot of fatigue and make the parents prone to infections and depression.

The important thing in these sort of circumstances is that the parents avail any time they have to get sleep. This is off course easier said than done, but making efforts towards achieving the aim, can be helpful. There is no magic formula for the parents to maximize their sleeping time, but some strategies can be used. All its needs is a little creativity and some thinking out of the box.

    The first and the most straightforward way to increase your sleeping time is to sleep when your baby sleeps. This can only be done when you forget about the various chores like laundry, dishwashing etc.

    Secondly, the first six months of a baby’s life are not ideal to expand your social life. Infact, it is time for you to cut down on your engagements and snatch whatever time you get to sleep.

    Sharing the responsibility can also be an ideal way for the parents to maximize sleep. Sure a father cannot feed an infant but he can look after him/her post-feed so that the mother can take some well deserved rest.

    The baby should not get the habit of sleeping in the parent’s arms or on their bed. Cot should be the place for the babies to sleep and that can be done only if the parents make it a habit. Rocking the baby too much can also make parent’s life complicated because then the baby won’t sleep without it.

    It is also important to create a timetable for breast feeding. It is not always necessary that when a baby is crying, he/she is doing so just because of hunger or the diaper getting wet. It is possible that the baby is having comfort issues and while parents should be watchful, they should not over do it.
