How to Hunt Quail without a Dog
Hunting quail is considered to be a gentleman’s game. Not only the hunter enjoys this experience but spectators also love to see this. It is known as sport of aristocracy for several of years. However, you are required to have skills in order to hunt a quail. Hunting with bird dogs is a great option. These dogs direct you towards a group of quails when find their scent. As a result, it is easier for a hunter to hunt down his target. However, there is no need to panic as with some simple guidelines, you can take on quails.

Preparation of weapons
Prepare the weapons you require in order to hunt a quail. You need to make sure they are in working order and are cleaned. Nowadays people are opting for 28-gauge shotgun. However, 20-gauge shotgun is the most common hunting weapon. You need to apply proper barrel length and choke on your shotgun. You can use a skeet or better cylinder choke along with 26” barrel. -

Gear up
Next you need to gear up for hunting. You need to wear clothes according to the climate and environment. It is strongly recommended to wear pants which are resistant to thorns and briars. -

Location
Quails are mostly found in open land and woody cover. They feed upon seeds in fields which have diverse vegetation e.g. annual weeds with native grasses. When quails feel threatened, they hide in briars. Remember that quails cannot walk through overgrazed or thick grasses. They also feel threatened in fields with small grass. -

Approaching
You need approach slowly towards tall weeds and glasses. After reaching, step into them. Kick into the thickest parts of the tall grasses. Quails usually sit in them and when the grass is kicked, they flush away. When passing through briars, you need to wear appropriate clothing to be safe. Remember that quails are camouflaged with their natural colour. You might even pass through them without noticing their presence. Thus you need to keep your eyes open. You need to approach them without making any noise.
