How to Import Outlook Contacts to Hotmail

If you are among Windows Live Hotmail user and have been using Microsoft Outlook to send and receive email, you may need to have all your contacts to be available on Hotmail to avoid any loss. You can import your Outlook contacts into your Hotmail account anytime you want. First you have to export your contacts from your Outlook account into any desired location in your computer and then they can be imported in your Hotmail account. However, both the export and import of the contacts require a format that is recognizable by Hotmail. Therefore, make sure you export and import the contacts in a CSV (Comma Separated Values) format, which is especially designed to stock up numerical and text data and to split the data across various platforms.

    First you have to export your Outlook contacts for which you have to open your Outlook account.

    Once you open your account, click the "File" option from the menu bar of your Outlook account.

    Select the “Import and Export.”

    Move on and click “Export to a file" and then choose "Next."

    Select "Comma Separated Values (Windows)" and click "Next."

    Now, wait for one or two seconds until a separate small window will be opened in front of you. Click "Contacts" and then hit the "Next" option.

    Now, browse and select from the available locations where you want to save your Outlook Contacts in a CSV format.

    Now, it will ask you to name the CSV file according to your ease and choice. Therefore, name it or continue with the automatically generated name by the system.

    Now, hit the "Next" option to proceed and then click the "Finish" button.

    You have successfully exported your Outlook contacts. Now close your Outlook account and open the saved CSV file in order to make sure that all of your contacts have been exported properly.

    Now move on and import them into your Hotmail account. For this purpose, double click the internet browser that you are currently using and open Hotmail’s Login page by typing their URL in the address bar.

    Now, carefully enter your Hotmail ID and password into the specific fields in order to sign into your Windows Live Hotmail account.

    Go to your Hotmail Inbox and hover the pointer of your mouse to the “Messenger" link at the top left corner of the page.

    Click on the drop down menu of the Messenger and choose “Contacts.” You can also find the "Contact" option in the left pane of the page. In addition to that, click the "Mange" link and then simply hit the "Import" link in order to proceed.

    Go to the “Add people from other services” section and select the "Outlook" link.

    Now, make sure that the Step 2 in this page is automatically default to "Microsoft Outlook using CSV." Otherwise, you can do it yourself by clicking “Step 2.”

    Moving on, click “Choose file” that is located right in front of “Step 3 Choose the file to import.”

    Scroll down in order to find the CSV file that you saved when exporting your Outlook contacts.

    Click "Import Contacts" link, right beneath Step 3. Wait for a few seconds until Windows Live will verifies successful import on the next screen.
