How to Improve at Basketball

Basketball is one of the most addictive sports, but unlike football, cricket, hockey and baseball, it is not an easy one to master. In basketball, there are way too many technicalities involved and even a single mistake can result in a foul, and a consequent lost possession. These nitty gritties are however not that difficult to overcome, and with continuous practice and dedicated efforts, one can master the game.

Develop and understanding about the rules of the game

There are a lot of manuals and guidelines regarding the rules of basketball, and reading them helps to some extent. However, until a person hits the court and makes the mistakes on it, learning would not come. Playing the game is critical in understanding it.

Develop mental toughness and acumen for the game

Basketball demands a lot of mental toughness. It was only last post season when the Los Angeles Clipper came back from near thirty point deficit to stun the Memphis Grizzlies in the first game of the first round series. That one game proved to be the difference in the end. Comebacks like these need a lot of mental toughness and belief, and should be worked upon.

Mental toughness is also necessary to hold your own and remember the plays when the going gets tough, usually at the end of games. Players like Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Carmelo Anthony are no doubt extremely talented, but there are idolized because they know how to win games and that has more to do with the mental side of things.

    Work on shooting

A good basketball player has to be a good shooter, and that can only come with practice. The more a player sweats on the court when the game is not being played, better will he be when the time to deliver comes.

    Work on your dribbling

While being a shooter is a must, this sort of shot making becomes very difficult in the face of a formidable defence. That is the time when your dribbling skills come into play. A good basketball player knows how to slash and dash, and create space for himself.

    Work on ball distribution

Basketball is a team game and if you don’t have the ability to make others around look better, you are not a good player in any book.
