How to Increase Your Metabolism

The process by which your body burns calories to release energy is called metabolism. Metabolism can be increased by making a few simple adjustments to your eating habits, doing exercise and performing high-intensity workout.

    Eat more often, but in less quantity

    Increase the number of meals that you eat during the course of the day, while making the quantity of these meals smaller than before. When you start eating more frequently, you will naturally want to eat less. Your stomach will start feeling full faster than before, thus sating your appetite. Each time you eat, you stimulate your metabolism for a short time. By eating more often, you will be stimulating your metabolism more often. The smaller size of the meals will keep you from putting on extra weight and would therefore allow you to remain fit.

    Eat healthy

    Just because you have been given the green light to eat more often does not mean that you can ignore the quality of food. Avoid junk food, processed food and foods that are cooked in saturated fats. Instead, go for foods that have a high nutritional value. Eating healthy food gives a boost to your metabolism. Increase your fibre intake. Even though your body cannot break it down, it tries to do so anyway using energy released during metabolism and thus prompting your body to release even more energy.

    Cardiovascular Exercise

    Performing exercise is an extremely effective way to increase your metabolism. Cardiovascular exercise not only uses up energy, but also speeds up the rate at which your heart pumps blood to the body. Using up the energy and increasing the blood flow both result in metabolism becoming higher. Try to take out some time for running, climbing, riding a bike, climbing, etc at least three-to-five times a week.

    Perform high-intensity workout

    High-intensity workout includes lifting weights and performing exercises such as crunches, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. Aside from benefits similar to that of cardiovascular exercise, high-intensity workout also develops muscles. Increasing muscle mass increases the amount of calories that your body burns.

    Your body continues to burn calories while you are resting. The metabolism is affected by your sleeping habits. If you do not get enough sleep, your body does not burn calories as efficiently as it does when you are getting ample sleep. Therefore, be sure to get plenty of sleep.
