Remove the old quill stem
First of all take off the all the face plates of your old quill stem. All you have to do is, unscrew all the bolts that compress into the steer tube of your bicycles and carefully take out the headset top cap. -

Set the threadless stem
Place the new threadless stem onto your bicycle’s steer tube. Make sure that the newly installed stem is set in such a way that there is at least 3mm to 6mm space between its tip and the top of the steer tube. This adjustment is very important as without enough space between the two tops, you would not be able to tighten your bicycle’s new headset. -

Re-install the faceplates
Now position the bicycle’s handlebar into the stem, re-install the faceplates and tighten them with a hand wrench or bike wrench. Make sure to pay attention to the tilt of the bike’s bar, setting it at center. -

Re-install the top cap of the headset
At this moment, re-set the top cap of the bike’s headset and tauten its screws properly. -

Align the New Stem
Bring the newly installed threadless stem into line with the wheel and then tighten its steer bolts thoroughly. -

Final Inspection
Test out the rigidity of all the bolts of the bicycle in order to make sure that it is all set to go. -
