Instructions

  • 1

Get a point-and-shoot camera for your child. Point-and-shoot cameras come in a vast range of prices and are generally affordable. Involve him/her in buying the camera and keep discussing the specifications so that you indirectly transfer all the technical information. The first camera should not be expensive. It should be sturdy with a solid body and casing.

For young children, it is not advisable to give the camera to them altogether. You can keep it with yourself and let them have it when taking picture. Start with simple automatic settings. You can teach him/her detailed specifications after he/she passes the initial stages.

Give your child enough moments to capture. Encourage him/her to become the family photographer and forgive the first few not-so-good pictures. Arrange events like picnics and get together and give the child the role of the official photographer.

Discuss with him/her the picture quality in detail, in both good and bad pictures. This step needs patience. If a child gets encouragement for something, his interest in it will develop naturally and you will not have to do much. Transfer the pictures to the computer and analyze them on the big screen. If he/she has taken a particularly good shot, you can get it framed as recognition.

Take him/her to photography workshops with you; this however should not include those long hour lectures which bore you to death discussing camera science. The workshops should be practical ones where they teach you how to take pictures on spot and practice there. You can brush your child’s angle and light settings in these. Encourage him/her to experiment with the camera and take pictures both at school and at home.
