How to Keep a Poetry Journal

Many people have interest in literature, especially in poetry, and want to register their presence in this fraternity. But, lack of information discourages them. If you are one of those then keeping a poetry journal is certainly your best bet.

However, it is not that easy as it looks. You will have to keep couple of important things in mind while keeping a poetry journal. Do not worry, it is not difficult as starting a full fledged magazine. All you need to do is to make a list of authors and then arrange them in a sequence.

    Decide the type of your journal:

    First and the foremost thing you should do is to decide what type of journal you want to keep. Is it the classic poetry or the modern era that attracts you? Do you want to cover romantic poetry or you want to make a collection of objective poetry? This will not only help you in short listing the pieces of poetry but you will also be able to decide your target audience.

    Make a list of poets:

    After deciding the nature of your journal, now it’s time to make a list of poets that you want to include in your journal. There is no restriction of time period. For example, if you are making a journal of romantic poetry then you can add a poet from 18th century along with the poets of modern age. However, make sure that the work of that poet is relevant to your journal.

    Selecting pieces of poetry:

    You cannot include complete work of a poet so it is better to make a list of every poet’s work and then pick the best pieces of poetry. If you are confused then seek help from a friend and ask a neutral person to give an honest opinion.

    Arrange poets in chronological order:

    Though, there is no such rule but still it looks better if you arrange the poets in chronological order. In a way, you will be arranging a brief history of that genre of poetry. Moreover, it will easy for the readers to understand that who had what ideology in which era.

    Add variety in your journal:

    One more thing to remember is that you should have variety in your journal to keep the reader interested. You should have a perfect blend of classic and modern poetry.
