How to Landscape with Coquina Rock
Coquina is a sedimentary rock, primarily found on the east coast beaches of Florida. There are only a limited number of coquina rock quarries; two of them being in St. Augustine and Ormond Beach respectively. If you are a landscaper, a piece of coquina rock can be the best landscaping material you will ever be able to lay your hands on. Coquina belongs to the limestone family. Whole and fragmented shells in a matrix of sand and held securely in place with calcite are the materials in the composition of coquina.
Instructions
-
1
Determine what type of landscape project you wish to accomplish by using the coquina rock. Building large waterfalls, setting boulder specimens or laying gazebo foundations can be some of the possible options.
-
2
Educate yourself about the use of coquina rock for landscaping. This can be accomplished by observing pictures of completed landscape projects randomly available on the internet. Furthermore, do some research with books related to use of coquina rock as a landscaping material.
-
3
When you are done with the research part, you can move on to laying out the plan you have in your mind. Make sure that the way you use coquinas rock resembles native Florida landscaping. This will impart a more natural look to your project.
-
4
With a fairly large bucket at your disposal, make a trip to one of the beaches where coquina rock is found. Gather an appropriate amount of coquina rock in the bucket and bring it back to the place where using it for landscaping purposes.
-
5
Before you start landscaping, prepare the area. Get rid of grass and any other obstacles which may pose a hindrance. Depending on the size of pieces of coquina rock you intend to use, dig shallow holes in the ground. These holes will be used to hold pieces of coquina rock in place.
-
6
Before you place the rocks in the shallow holes that you dug earlier, wash them thoroughly. This will wash out ocean salt accumulated on the rocks, ensuring the safety of plants in your garden.
-
7
If required, visit a quarry to purchase larger sections of coquina rock.
-
8
Place the larger pieces yourself is possible. Otherwise, you can hire a contractor or a landscaper to do the job for you.
