How to Make a Face Mask for Oily Skin

For those of us who have oily skin, we know that many of the regular face washes and moisturizers out there for normal skin don’t provide the results we seek. Oil is naturally produced by the skin, however over-drying your skin with products can cause your body to counter react and produce excess amounts of oil to compensate.

Luckily, there are several natural (always recommended) and easy face masks that can be made to help those of us who have oily skin.

Men’s skin tends to be oilier than the fairer sex and it is not recommended that you use a mask more than once a week regardless of how oily your skin may be.

    The Categories

In order to create a mask that is going to help treat your oily skin, it must contain 3 types of ingredients. They are categorized as oil absorbing, exfoliating and anti-bacterial. Each category serves an important purpose and aids healthy skin. Household items that fall into these categories are as follows:

Oil Absorbing – oatmeal and egg whites

Exfoliating – applesauce, yoghurt, carrot puree (baby food)

    Anti-Bacterial – honey

You may also require a food processor or blender. The best way to apply a mask is with a brush or by hand, small paintbrushes for artists work great and are readily available.

    Mix It

In order to create an effective mask that is easy to spread, the goal is to get a consistency that is similar to a thick paste. If you choose to use oatmeal, ensure that it is blended until it is a powder. This will make it easy to spread and add to create the right consistency.

Egg whites (usually one will suffice) should be beaten with a fork or eggbeater until fluffy. Mix one item of your choice from each of the categories. You will need to experiment with various amounts in order to get a thick spreadable paste.

Start with the most liquid ingredient and add thicker ones until your desired consistency is achieved. You want the mask to go on easily and remain on your face.

    Prepare Your Skin

Before applying any mask, it is strongly suggested that you prepare your skin. This is done by washing it with a gentle cleanser and patting it dry with a clean towel. Cleansers for oily skin are recommended, however any mild cleanser like Spectrogel will suffice.

    Apply It

Using a brush or your fingers, spread the mask evenly over your face. For best results, ensure that your entire face is covered excluding your lips, nostrils and eyes. Allow the mask to remain on your face for 15-20 minutes. It is suggested that you take this time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Once the allotted time has passed, wash the mask off with lukewarm water and the same cleanser that you used before applying the mask. Pat your face dry with your towel and enjoy the results.

    Storing Extra

If you happen to have an excess of your concoction, place it in a clean plastic container and store it in your fridge. Use it again in a week's time.

    BONUS

Another wonderfully easy and effective mask solution that we came across is as follows:

Purchase a bottle of Milk of Magnesia (for stomach ailments) at your local grocery store or pharmacy. Be sure that the milk is not flavoured, the more plain the better. Apply this to your face for 10-15 minutes. After the time has passed, wipe your face clean with a cold wash cloth.
