How to Make a Soulfood Breakfast

Soul food is range of cuisine which is popular among African American culture. Usually when soul foods are mentioned, people talk about breakfast food. However, in ancient times during slavery, breakfast was the most important meal of the day. Nowadays many restaurants especially those located in the Southern American serve soul food breakfast all day long. There are several soul food breakfast items with Big Mama’s Skillet Southern delight being one of the most popular. Some other popular recipes include egg and biscuit scramble, cinnamon toast, Hoe cakes, Maple syrup, Peanut Butter and Jelly Granola Bars etc.

    Big Mama’s Skillet Southern Delight

    Prep time: 30 min
    Cook time: 15 to 20 min
    Total time: 45 to 50 min
    Yield: 2 to 3 servings
    Utensils: Skillet, large bowl, measuring spoons, frying pan, mixing bowl and serving plates and spoons.

    Ingredients:
    Vegetable or olive oil: 2 tablespoons
    Potatoes, sliced: 6 medium
    Yellow onion, diced: ½
    Green pepper, diced: ½
    Season salt: To taste
    Black pepper: ¼ teaspoon
    Celery seed: 1/8 teaspoon
    Dash of crushed red pepper or cayenne, optional
    Breakfast sausage, cooked and drained: 1 pound
    Mushrooms, sliced: ½ cup
    Water:1/8 cup
    Shredded cheddar cheese: 1 cup
    Eggs, beaten: 6 to 8
    Margarine: 1 tablespoon

    First you need to take a large skillet and fill it with oil. Heat it and then add potatoes, onions, green peppers, salt, pepper, celery seed and red pepper. Deep-fry with low heat for almost five minutes in order to prevent the ingredients from sticking. Then increase the heat and sausage. Stir for five minutes. In end you need to add mushrooms and water and cover the skillet. Heat it until potatoes are tender.  Then pour cheese onto potatoes until it melts when you serve.

    You can serve scrambled eggs with margarine with this. You need to prepare this in a separate skillet.

    Big Mama’s Egg and Biscuit Scramble

    Prep time: 25 to 30 min
    Bake time: 10 to 15 min
    Total time: 35 to 45 min
    Yield: 4 to 6 servings
    Utensils: Mixing bowl, stove, sheet pan, spoons, serving plates and spoons

    Ingredients:
    Breakfast sausage: 1 ½ pound
    Chopped onions: 1 ¼ cups
    Green peppers: 1 ¼ cups
    Eggs: 10 large
    Shredded cheese: 1 ½ cups
    Buttermilk biscuits (baked and split): 6 large

    First you need to brown the sausages, onions and peppers. Use skillet to do this. Drain them afterwards. Next you need to take eggs and mix them in medium sized bowl. Add this to the mixture you created first. Scramble it with medium heat on the stove.

    Now you need to place the biscuit with their cut side facing upwards on a sheet pan. Add the scrambled egg mixture and cheese over these biscuits. Later place them in an oven. Heat these biscuits in 375 degrees and continue heating until the cheese on top melts down.

    Breakfast Sausage

    Prep time: 15 min
    Bake time: 15 min
    Total time: 30 min
    Yield: 3 to 4 servings
    Utensils: Baking dish, bowl, paper towel or tissue, serving plates.

    Ingredients:
    Sausage links: 9 to 12

    Place the sausages in a skillet and brown them on all sides. Use a paper towel or tissue to drain them and then serve.
