How to Make a Trailer Hitch for a Snow Plow

If you live in areas that receive heavy snowfall in winter, having a snow plow is must for you. You do not need to have purpose made vehicle for the purpose, you can simply modify back or centre of your regular pickup truck for that purpose. You may also join the snow plow from front of the vehicle but generally it is easier to hitch the snow plow at back of your truck, and it is also more effective in pulling technique to clear the area. The snow plow is particularly effective where emergencies services are unable to operate, in or around your house or street.

Instructions

  • 1

    Location of Spot

First of all you will need to locate a place in the centre of the snow plow. Mark the place against the mounting plate to drill a hole. Without drilling a hole you cannot attach the snow plow with your truck. Also, mark the place right in the centre of the snow plow, as it is necessary to maintain a balance while it is being trailed behind.

  • 2

    Drilling of Holes

Next step is drilling of holes. Make sure you drill the holes at the place you have marked for the purpose. Wear all safety equipment while drilling the holes. It is not very difficult but holding the drill firmly is a tricky part of the job and you should be able to do it perfectly.

  • 3

    Mounting Plate

After drilling the holes, you will need to fix the mounting plate against the frame. You can do this by holding the plate, just against the frame and at the place where you have drilled the holes, and put the bolts through the drilled holes carefully.

  • 4

    Screw Bolts

You will need to screw the bolts to make sure that mounting plate does not slide. Tighten the nuts and sockets with a wrench by changing its mouth to fit the size of the screws. This makes your snow plow ready to be hitched at back of the truck.

  • 5

    Aligning Hitch Arm

Then align the hitch arm with the mounting plate, after tightening the nuts and push the arm downward at back of the seat place. Put through the carriage bolts and tighten them with an open-end wrench.

  • 6

    Slipping Hitch Ball

Slip the hitch ball at the ball place and insert the bolt. Tighten the bolt with hand until you can do it conveniently, and after that you can tighten it with a pipe wrench. Do not use an open-end wrench, as you might not be able to tighten the bolt completely and if you put too much force on the wrench, you might break it.
