How to Make a Tricorn Hat
A tricorn hat is the one that Captain Jack Sparrow wore in the famous movie series ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. The movie became famous all over the world and with the movie, the tricorn hat gained popularity. Making a tricorn hat at home is a fairly difficult task because it requires a good amount of cutting, folding and tacking. However, for fans of the franchise, making a tricorn hat can be fun.
Things Required:
– Felt fabric
– Fabric glue
– Piece of string
– Pair of scissors
– Fabric pen
– Pins or tacks
– Glue
– Spray starch

The Hat Band:
The size of the hat band depends on the size of the person’s head who will be putting on the tricorn hat. Run a piece of string around the forehead of the person for whom you are making the hat. Extend the length of the piece of string by about an inch and cut it at that point.
Cut a piece of felt about 1 inch longer than the piece of string from the previous step. Make sure that the piece of felt you use is 3 inches in width.
Make a circle from the piece of felt. Apply glue to about 1 inch length of felt on either of the ends. Firmly hold both ends of the felt attached to each other, with the sticky end on top of the other one. Allow enough time for the glue to harden completely. -

The Top:
While maintain the circular shape of the hat band, place it on a piece of felt.
Use a fabric pen to outline the inner boundary of the hat band onto the felt. Draw a second circle which should completely surround the first circle and should be about an inch larger in radius than the first circle.
With a pair of scissors, cut the felt. When you are done cutting, you will have a circle surrounded by tabs.
Fold the tabs from the previous step and position them in such a way that they go inside the hat band. Affix the hat band onto the top with the help of glue. As you did earlier, wait for the glue to harden completely before moving on to the next step. -

The Brim:
Making the brim of the tricorn hat is an easy task. With a fabric pen, draw an oval on a piece of felt and then cut it out using a pair of scissors. Once that has been accomplished, place the hat band and the hat top right in the centre of the oval felt piece.
Trace around the oval felt piece and then use a fabric pen in order to draw the boundaries of the band.
Fold up the tabs until they are completely covered by the band and then secure the folded tabs in place with glue. -

Cocking the Hat:
Fold one of the oval ends of the piece of felt which you used to make the brim of the hat. Keep folding until the brim comes into contact with the band. Secure the folded end to the band with the help of glue.
Repeat the same process with the other side of the oval piece of felt. Liberally spray starch onto the hat and allow it to dry completely.
