One of the most delicious treats during Christmas is candy canes. In case you are craving them in the summer or any other season, you will face difficulty in finding them. However, there is no need to get worried as you can easily make them in your home after following some simple instructions and getting the right ingredients.
Ingredients
  • Candy thermometer
  • Sugar - 2 cups
  • Light corn syrup - ½ cup
  • Water - ½ cup
  • Cream of tartar - ¼ tablespoon
  • Peppermint extract - ¾ tablespoon
  • Red food colouring - 1 tablespoon
Instructions
  1. Get a huge, heavy bottomed saucepan and add two cups of sugar, ½ cup of light corn syrup, ½ cup of water and ¼ tablespoon of cream of tartar in it.
  2. Then thoroughly mix all these ingredients in the large saucepan.
  3. You need to continue stirring these ingredients until the sugar dissolves.
  4. Next, you need to insert the candy thermometer in the mixture and then cook it.
  5. You are required to cook the mixture until the reading on the candy thermometer reaches 265 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. After cooking, you need to take the mixture and place it in the peppermint extract.
  7. Get another pan and place half of the mixture into it.
  8. Next, get the red food colouring and add it in any one of the mixtures.
  9. Next you need to let the mixture cool down.
  10. During this process, you can grease three cookie sheets.
  11. After cooling down the mixture, you need to apply butter on your hands and the spatula.
  12. Use this spatula to cut off a part of the clear taffy.
  13. Then get some help from a friend or family member as you do the same with the red taffy.
  14. Now you need to fold the pieces on the cookie sheets.
  15. Continue doing this until they look polished.
  16. Now you can roll them into an 18 inch long coil.
  17. In the end you need to twist the head of the cane and let it cool on the third greased cookie sheet.
