How to Make Carpet Powder

Chemicals are a basic ingredient in most of the carpet powder brands available in the market nowadays. Fortunately, you can make your own carpet powder using some basic natural ingredients. Most of the ingredients you will require for making carpet powder at home are readily available at grocery stores and are quite inexpensive.

Things Required:

– Borax
– Baking soda
– Essential oil, ground or dried herbs
– Plastic or glass bowl
– Wooden or plastic spoon
– Clean shaker, such as a baby powder or cheese shaker container
– Vacuum cleaner

Instructions

  • 1

Determine the purpose for which you want to use the carpet powder. The powder you make can either be multi-purpose or can be manufactured for the sole purpose of making the carpet smell better. If you go with the former option, you will need to use sweet orange oil (natural flea repellent) or lavender (for soothing effect) as an ingredient. However, if you just want your carpet to smell better, you can choose any essential oil fragrance.

Depending on planned use of the carpet powder, purchase the required ingredients such as borax, baking soda, essential oil(s) and dried herbs.

  • 3

Add equal parts of borax and baking powder to a plastic or glass container and stir until a uniform mixture is formed. Use a wooden or plastic spoon for stirring the contents of the bowl. One cup of both borax and baking powder should work just fine.

  • 4

To make the powder scented, add an appropriate number of essential oil drops in the bowl. If you do not want to use essential oil, you can add a spoon of cinnamon or ground cloves for adding scent to the carpet powder. As before, stir until no lumps remain in the bowl.

  • 5

Transfer powder from the bowl to a clean shaker of your choice. You can use a baby powder shaker or cheese shaker container. Make sure that the container you use is clean and dry.

  • 6

Shake powder onto your carpet(s). Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for the powder to sit properly and then use a vacuum cleaner to clean and  remove it. When you are done with this step, your carpet would smell a lot better than before.
