Yield: 8 corn sticks
Utensils: Mixing bowl, large skillet
Ingredients
Cornmeal: 1 and ½ cups
White sugar: ½ cup
Salt: 1 ¼ tsp
Boiling water: 1 cup
American cheese, cut in half: 4 slices
Vegetable oil for frying: 1 quart
Instructions
-
1
Prepare the dough
Take a mixing bowl and add 1 and ½ cups of cornmeal, ½ cup of sugar, 1 and ¼ teaspoons of salt and 1 cup of boiling water to it. Mix these ingredients until a dough is formed. -
2
Cool the dough
After the dough has formed, set it aside in order to cool it. It will require almost 10 minutes for the dough to cool down properly. -
3
Create a depression in the centre of the dough
Next you need to take a spoonful of dough and place it in the palm of your hand. Then make a depression in the centre of the dough placed in your hand. -
4
Insert the American cheese in the depression
Take a half slice of American cheese and fold it into a wad. Then insert the wad of cheese into the depression you formed earlier. -
5
Shape the corn stick
After inserting the folded cheese, you need to add a little bit more dough on the top. Then roll the corn stick into the shape of sausage. However, you should check that the cheese is not exposed after shaping the corn stick. -
6
Repeat
When you have shaped one corn stick, you can repeat the procedure until you have used up all the remaining cheese and dough. -
7
Heat the oil
Now you need to take a large skillet and pour 1 quart of vegetable oil in it for frying purposes. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F or 190 degrees C. -
8
Fry the corn sticks
After heating the oil, place the corn sticks you formed in it. Fry these corn sticks until they turn golden brown and float to the top of the oil. You need to cook for almost four minutes per side. -
9
Serve
You are required to drain the corn sticks on a paper towel-lined plate after they are cooked. Then, you can proceed to serve the corn sticks.
