The first thing you need to do is to understand that there are certain requirements that should be kept in mind while making custom ringtones for a Windows phone. Firstly, you need to have Microsoft’s Zune software installed on your system. If you have been using a Windows phone for quite some time, then you probably have it installed already. Secondly, the length of the custom ringtone cannot be longer than 39 seconds. If it exceeds this limit by even one megabyte, the ringtone will not work. Thirdly, you cannot use music with DRM (Digital Rights Management) embedded into it for your ringtone.

Once you are clear about the aforementioned requirements, start with the process of making a custom ringtone by downloading and installing an audio editing software onto your computer. Audacity is a popular choice among users and the best part is that you can download it for free.

Once you have downloaded and installed an audio editing software such as Audacity on your computer, launch it and locate the music file that you wish to use for your custom ringtone. The programme will display the visual of the music. Simply highlight the part of the music that you want to set as your ringtone and delete the rest of the music. This will give you a 39-second loop of your selected track. Save the file as WMA before importing it to your Zune software.

After importing the edited music file to the Zune music collection, right-click on the music file in the Zune music library and select “Edit” from the context menu. You will see a new window named “Edit Song Info” open. Click on the drop-down menu under the heading of “Genre” and select the ringtone option from there. Click “Save” to save the edited music file as a ringtone.
