How to Make Diabetic Dog Treats

There are a number of diseases which are common in humans as well as dogs, and diabetes is one of those diseases. If your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes, the need to monitor its eating habits becomes essential. The aim is to restrict the sugar and carbohydrate intake. Packaged dog foods are not always safe for a diabetic dog, nor are regular dog treats. In order to deal with this situation, you can make safe and healthy treats for your diabetic dog at home.

To make muffin treats for your dog, add 2 cups of whole wheat flour and 1 cup of oats to a mixing bowl and thoroughly mix them. After that, add 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp baking powder to the contents of the mixing bowl. Add 4 eggs, 2/3 cup canola oil, 2 cups pureed pumpkin and 1/2 tsp vanilla to a second mixing bowl and mix the ingredients. Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients.

Turn on the microwave oven and wait until it reaches the optimum temperature of 350 degrees Celsius. Start pouring the mixture which you prepared in the previous step into small muffin tins until all of the mixture has been used up. Bake the muffins in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes. You will now have to remove the cooked muffins from the tins. This can be accomplished by inserting a toothpick in the centre of one of the muffins and then trying to lift it out. Give one muffin to your diabetic dog everyday, as a treat.

Diabetic dog cookies can also be made as a treat. These are prepared by mixing 1 cup of wheat germ with 2 jars of meat-flavoured baby food. Continue to mix until a dough is formed, and then roll the dough into small balls. Spread a cookie sheet on a baking tray, and place all of the balls onto the sheet. Use a fork to completely flatten the balls and bake them in an oven preheated at 350 degrees Celsius for about 20 minutes. These cookies are safe for your diabetic dog because baby food does not contain salt or sugar.
