How to Make Dreadlocks

Dreadlocks or dreads are an extremely cool hairstyle for a few people; however, others believe it to be a spiritual pursuit or even a political statement. In order to make the perfect dreadlocks, you will need the right kind of hair. You need to make sure that your hair is long enough to support such a hair style. Moreover, you also have to make sure that you are extremely patient while trying to style your hair like this. Patience is the key because at times you will require months so they can mature up and you can start making thick and solid dreads. There are even a few people who would take a year for the perfect dreads. Use the following steps in order to make dreadlocks just the way you want them.

Instructions

  • 1

People with wavy, thick or even curly hair would easily make dreadlocks. In case you have thin, straight hair then you will have to give yourself a good perm.

  • 2

Only a week or ten days before you start the process, you must stop using conditioner since you want your hair to be less silky.

  • 3

The day you want to start making dreadlocks, rinse your hair with a solution of 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 quart water.

  • 4

Always start off with dry hair. Grab a hair of about 1 inch square right from the roots and start twisting them tightly.

  • 5

Once you have grabbed one portion of your hair, start pinning the rest of them back with the help of hair clip. Start back combing the twisted hair right from the roots, then moving to the end and back on to the roots again.

  • 6

Now you will require a little styling wax in order to give your dreadlocks a permanent looks. Simply wax and twist your hair and make sure that each lock you make remains twisted.

  • 7

After making several dreads in a similar manner, use a rubber band at the end of each dread. Keep twisting the dreads all over your head.

  • 8

Depending upon the time you have, you can either twist your entire head in a single day or do half of it. You might need help from your friends regarding hair on the back of your head.

  • 9

Once your dreadlocks have taken a shape, you will have to twist them and comb and wax them on a daily basis. This type of hairstyle will require a lot of maintenance.
