This certainly does not mean that one should be deprived of the awesome treat though. With simple changes in the recipe, doughnuts can be made healthy as well. The best part is that there is no difference in the taste.

So no more feeling guilty after munching on your favourite snack. Just make minor changes in the recipe and in the way the doughnuts are cooked, and the end calories will be much lower than a regular doughnut.

Prep time: 10 min
Bake time: 15 min
Total time: 25 min
Yield: 14 doughnuts
Utensils: Doughnut pan, mixing bowls, spoon, whisk.

Ingredients:
Nonstick cooking spray: According to requirement
Whole-wheat flour: 1 cup
All-purpose flour: 1 cup
Sugar: 1/2 cup
Baking powder: 1 1/2 tsp
Ground nutmeg: 1/4 tsp
Salt: 1/2 tsp
Low-fat buttermilk (1%): 2/3 cup
Eggs: 2 Large
Honey: 1/4 cup
Melted butter: 2 tbsp
Vanilla extract: 1 tbsp

Instructions

  • 1

Place the oven on pre-heat at 425 F so that it is ready and warm to receive the doughnuts while you prepare the batter. Spray the doughnut pan with cooking oil to make sure that doughnuts will come off easily after the baking.

  • 2

Take a large mixing bowl. Add to it  flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. These are the dry ingredients; mix them well together.

  • 3

In another bowl, add the buttermilk, eggs, honey, butter, and vanilla. Whisk these wet ingredients together thoroughly. Now pour over this mixture over the dry ingredients one. Use a whisk to combine these well together, making sure that no lumps are formed. You should be left with a thick and smooth batter for the doughnuts in which all ingredients are evenly mixed.

  • 4

Use a large spoon to put the batter into the doughnut pans. Fill them to two-thirds of the capacity. Place the pan into the pre-heated oven.

Place the tray right in the middle of the oven so that it gets even heat from all sides. The doughnuts will be ready when they spring back on the touch. This will take approximately fifteen minutes. Baking helps make the doughnuts healthier.

Take out the doughnuts and glaze with healthy toppings like fruit and lemon juice. Avoid using sugar icing and chocolate syrups which are loaded with calories. The glazing part determines the healthiness of the doughnuts.
