If you enjoy making clay figurines, sculptures or other decorative items then making your own modeling clay can be a very economical alternative. It is very easy to do and does not take long as you will find most of the items needed lying around your home. You can also bake and color this clay to add the perfect finishing touches to your artistic masterpiece.

Things Required:

– ¾ cup warm water
– 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
– 1 ¼ cup salt
– 1 ¼ cup flour
– 1 tablespoon cooking oil
– Food Coloring
– Large Bowl
– Spoon
– Plastic storage container
– Oven
– Baking sheet
– Paint
– Markers

Instructions

  • 1

Take a large bowl and put in the cream of tartar, salt and flour. Mix the ingredients with a spoon to ensure you get a decent consistency.

  • 2

Slowly add warm water to the mixture. While adding, make sure that you are constantly stirring with the spoon. All of the ingredients will begin to bunch together.

  • 3

Keep adding the warm water until your mixture turns in to dough.

  • 4

Once you get to the point where it becomes difficult to stir the mixture, add a very little amount of cooking oil. This will make the entire mixture easier to stir.

  • 5

You can easily add any type of food coloring at this stage to give your clay mixture a nice shade.

  • 6

Put the uncovered bowl in the refrigerator for about an hour and use it to make any artistic item that you prefer. Once you are done, put any remaining modeling clay in a plastic storage container.

  • 7

If you want to bake your clay figurines or sculptures then make sure to preheat the oven to around 350 degrees F. You will need a baking sheet to put your clay items on before sticking it inside the oven.

  • 8

Place all of your clay artwork on a baking sheet and put it in the oven for around 20 minutes. Make sure to check while baking the clay that they are drying out. Once you are satisfied that the clay is hard and dry, you can take them out of the oven.

After allowing the clay items to dry, you can easily decorate the figurines or sculptures using different paints and markers. You can also use glitter or other decorative items to enhance the beauty of the objects that you have made. Remember it is entirely up to you as to how you want to decorate your clay items.
