How to Make Perfect Microwave Popcorn

Microwave popcorn is pretty easy to make, and it is difficult for even the worst cooks to mess it up. However, while many are contented with putting the bag in the microwave oven, letting it pop, and eating it as it is, there are a few tricks you can employ to make sure your popcorn is microwaved to perfection, and to enhance its flavour with a few extra additions.

Things Required:

– Microwave popcorn
– Microwave
– Large bowl
– Salted butter and seasonings (optional)

Begin by buying the best quality butter popcorn you can find, and make sure you get family-sized bags, as smaller bags result in far too many un-popped kernels. Make sure the package isn’t expired, as old, dried out kernels are far from conducive when it comes to making perfect microwave popcorn.

Before you begin microwaving, place a cup of water in the microwave, and run it for around one minute – this will steam, and the moisture will help your bag of popcorn pop efficiently and completely. Throw the water away once you’re done with this step.

Next, place your popcorn bag in the microwave oven, and proceed to pop it as per the instructions on the package. However, don’t assume that you can put it on timer and just walk off. Stay close to the microwave at all times, and listen carefully. When there begins to be a 2-second pause between pops, turn the microwave off and take the bag out, no matter what the instructions might say.

Shake the bag a couple of times, to evenly distribute the salt and butter inside, and leave it to cool – do not open immediately, or you might burn yourself with the steam. Once it has had time to cool down, open up the bag, and pour the contents out into a large bowl.

The popcorn should be perfectly done, and can now be eaten as it is. However, if you want to intensify the flavour and give yourself a real treat, melt a few tablespoons of salted butter in a small saucepan, add in some herbs and seasonings as per your wishes, and mix it all together over the heat. Pour this mixture over the popcorn in the bowl, and toss it all to evenly distribute the melted butter. Kick back on the couch, and enjoy.
