For starters, try your own sense of humour. If the other person likes you, try to be there for them. Always take things slow. You can’t jump to funny jokes if they are sad. Try to understand the problem they are currently going through and give them the space that they need.

Be funny to them. Try to crack jokes, but obviously don’t take a jump start whenever you are trying to play a joke. Take things slowly and go up to them with a mature approach. Talk to them about their problem and ask them each and everything that is wrong with their life.

Once you are done with understanding their problem. Try to give them advice. An advice is definitely something they are looking for. Moreover, if you can give them a hug, it is always nice. A hug can always make others feel good. Physical intimation is definitely something that will help others loosen up a bit. However, you have to be sure that you two are already close enough to hug.

If that does not work, it is time for you to start cracking jokes. Make fun of their life. Sometimes reverse psychology is the thing that works perfectly. Try to make fun of how things are so bad for them. They will understand your point of view and see things from a bigger picture and realize that their problems are not big enough.

Last, but not the least, try to give them a way out. If they are stuck, and they are having trouble with something, always be there to help them. It is always nice to help others and if you can be the one to help others out of their sadness, nothing is better than that.
