How to Marinate Steak with Beer

Marinates are used for coating steak meats. As a result, the meat softens and develops richer taste. Beer livens up the taste of steaks and makes it healthier for you. This is because enzymes in beer break down fibres which eventually lead in tendering of steaks and making it more delicious. Remember that marinating steaks with beer lowers the heterocyclic amines in steak. These substances become carcinogenic compounds in meat when they are cooked.

    Pick a beer to marinate the steak

    You need to choose a beer for marinating the steak purpose. Remember that all beer contain enzymes which tender the steaks. However, the flavour will be affected according to the type of beer you have bought.  In case you choose light beers such as light lagers, pale ales and pilsner which will add light flavour to the steaks. On the other hand intense beers add burnt, smoky or bitter taste to the steak. Some of the intense beers are nut browns, amber ales and extra special bitters (ESBs).

    Make the meat marinate

    In order to marinate the meat, you need to soak it in beer. In case you want to further liven up the taste of steaks, you can add herbs, spices and some other flavouring. In order to make Italian-style dish, you can add fresh or dried rosemary, basil, thyme and oregano. In order to make an Asian-style marinated steak, you can add soy sauce and ginger.

    Place the meat in the plastic bag

    Get a plastic bag, zip-topped preferably, and place the meat in it. By this unnecessary air will be removed from the bag. First you need to season the meat with salt and pepper and place it in the bag. Then add beer in the bag. Pour it carefully so it carefully falls on the meat. Later you need to seal the bag after trying to take out as much air as possible. Swish the bag in the end.

    Let the beer to tenderize the meat

    Let the beer tenderize the meat for at least an hour. You can also let it soak overnight but it causes greyish colour.

    Cook the meat

    In the end you can cook the meat in any way you desire. In case you are using stew method, you need to pour all contents of the plastic bag in the cooking liquid.
