First things first, you should pack changing supplies. The diaper bag should contain some diapers, a small pack of wipes, changing pad, diaper rash cream, petroleum jelly and a minimum of one set of new clothes. If you expect to be out for more than a few hours, pack extra quantities of these items, especially diapers and the clothes.

Stock up on food supplies. In case you are using baby formula feeding, always pack at least one more bottle than you think you will need. Bottles can have water added ahead of time and dry formula can be portioned out in a sectioned container for easy use. Burp cloths are another essential item.

Do not forget to add entertainment items to the bag. Whether it is a favourite infant toy or baby rattle, pack something that can entertain your little one while you are travelling.

Apart from packing items for your newborn, you should also pack some extras that you will need to make your journey easy and comfortable. For that purpose, you can have an extra pacifier, hand sanitizer, small blanket and CD of soothing music for the car. Always be prepared for the trip to take longer than you planned and pack accordingly.

Repack as soon as you return home. It is easier to remember what needs to be replenished in the diaper bag as soon as you return home. Repack the bag then so when you are heading out again, you know the diaper bag is ready to go for your newborn.
