How to Paint a Car At Home

A car’s paint certainly adds elegance to the overall look of the vehicle. Not just that, the basic purpose paint is to protect the metal body and parts from rust and sustain their shine. However, a few scratches on your car’s surface might malign the entire beauty of it, forcing you to cover up those marks with new paint. Getting your car painted from a professional will cost so much that most of us don’t bother to go to them if only minor scratches are present on our car. Why don’t you paint your car at home? This will be far economical then getting it done from a professional.

    You need to visit your nearby automotive paint store to purchase necessary tools for this job. The sales person over there will provide you with the paint, primer and the other tools which you will require. You can choose the existing shade of paint your car has or opt for some new colours. Whichever paint you select, make sure it is clear enamel mixed, as it will then not require a second coat.

    If your car has any dents in the body, you need to remove them first. A dent-pulling tool can be used to fix smaller dents. Bondo or body putty filler can also be fill out the deep scratches on your car’s body.

    If you see any spots of rust on your car, use a 100 grit sandpaper to wipe them off. The excess filler material should also be removed with the same sandpaper.

    Now wash out the whole car with soap and don’t let any signs of dirt, grease or dust on it. Dry up the car with a soft cloth.

    Next, you need to sand the entire car with 400 grit sandpaper to remove the existing coat of paint. It is better to use a sanding machine but a sanding block will also serve the purpose. This will prepare the right surface for primer and paint adhesion.

    Take masking paper and tape to cover up those portions of car which need not to be painted, such as windshield, emblems, trim, wheels and any such portions.

    Fill the primer in the automotive spraying tool, turn on the spray gun and prime the entire car with it.

    When the primer dries completely, sand the coat with 400 grit sandpaper and then wipe the car with damp towel.

    Now pour the paint into the paint gun, place its lid and turn on the air compressor.

    Make broad strokes from left to right while painting the car. You can apply a second coat if you feel necessary.
