How to Perform a Judo Hip Throw

A hip throw is a technique where you use your hip as a pivot point to throw somebody on the ground. This can happen when you put yourself into a lower position as compared to your opponent’s centre of gravity. When you start to learn Judo, it is one of the first few techniques that you master. This technique is known as Break-fall and you use your hip to put your opponent off balance, making him/her fall on the other side. You must know the basics of Judo in order to perform this throw, since you have to make sure that your opponent falls safely on the other side. There are several different types of hip throws and O Goshi is one of them.

    In order to prepare yourself for this basic Judo technique you must take the appropriate fighting stance. It is advised that you try the hip throw on someone who is taller and slower than you. However, practicing it with other statures will help you learn this technique in a better way.

    You must start off by putting your right foot forward. Place it right between the feet of your opponent. This move is easier to pull off if your opponent is moving quickly. Moreover, in case he/she has stepped forward, you’ll find it extremely easy to use their own speed to your advantage. Trying this technique when your opponent is standing is a far better idea as compared to doing it when he/she is in motion.

    Put your body to the right in such a way that your back is towards your opponent. You should align your hip with your opponent’s right side.

    Move your right arm and put it around his/her waist through their back. From there, use your left arm to grab his/her right arm, putting one of your arms across their body.

    Now you are ready to perform the hip throw. Simply use a little force to pull your opponent down in such a way that you reach under his/her body. Lie down and use your hip to push your opponent’s body up and over you. This technique will take a little time to master, but once you are able to do it, you will notice that it is extremely easy.

    Make sure that you let go of your opponent once he/she is about to fall on the other side. Your arm should guide them but not follow him/her until they fall.
