Most people think that preparing walls for paint is an easy and an unessential step but the reality is completely different. Actually, preparing walls for paint requires much more time than the actual procedure of painting. The most common mistake people make is to neglect this important step and ultimately this negligence results in a substandard paint job.

Your walls should be clean, dent free and even before the painting otherwise it will not last long. This can be difficult if you are not familiar with the process but a couple of simple suggestions can make things a lot easier.

    Clear the walls:

First of all, you should remove all the wall hangings to avoid any breakage and stains. You should also clear the room by taking all the furniture out. Cover the floor and immovable things with large sheets or drop cloths. This will give you space to work freely and you will be able to prepare the walls in much less time. Make sure that all the things are kept safe to reinstall after painting.

    Make repairs:

Next thing you should do is to inspect the walls closely and mark any imperfections. Usually, small holes, dents, dampness and peeling are the problems that painters identify while checking walls. You can fill the holes and repair dents with white cement or just a mixture of regular cement and sand. To overcome chipped or peeling paint, take sandpaper and start rubbing the walls. This will scrape off the paint and make your walls smooth. If you notice large holes and cracks then you will have to cover them with plaster. Let it desiccated and then use sandpaper to make it even.

    Clean the walls:

Now, when you have made repairs, it is time to clean the wall to get good results. Remove the dirt, stains or any unwanted marks. You may wash your walls with any phosphate-free wall cleaner. There are many wall cleaners available in the market but you should pick the less intense and expensive one.

    Do taping and masking:

Taping and masking are also important steps while preparing walls for paint. In this process, you cover all those areas which you do not want to paint. You can use painter’s blue tape for this purpose. This tape is easy to remove and it does not damage the walls in any way.

    Paint priming:

The last step in preparing the wall is paint priming. The primers not only make walls more even but they also help you in covering the wall in less coats.
