How to Prevent Motion Sickness

Motion sickness can ruin your travel plans. Those who have a history with motion sickness get reluctant to travel, especially long ones and so miss an important part of their life. This sickness can be experienced on road, sea and air travel and can cause nausea, headache and other related symptoms. It is caused when your ear, eyes and other sensory areas of your body send conflicting messages to your brain when they feel the motion. It starts to develop as mild nausea and grows to full body sweating and vomiting. The sickness leaves you exhausted and destroys all the fun you expected the trip to be. However, you cannot just ignore it and let it ruin your plans.

Before you set out on a journey, eat very lightly. Avoid eating heavy food which can cause heavy heart and nausea. Eating lemon and olive before setting out reduce the chances of the sickness as they are good for your digestion. Eating heavy, spicy and fat rich food before you set out can also encourage motion sickness. You can also eat over the counter anti motion sickness medicines like Bonine, Antivert, Dramamine which are very helpful in preventing the feeling.

Sit at the calmest part of your vehicle. This will be the front of your car and the middle portion of a plane. Now face your head in the direction you are going. Keep the eyes fixed in front of you. These actions will prevent any conflicting messages from your sensory organs to your mind as they will be fixed. Do not sit facing backward in your direction of motion. Do not read anything.

If you feel the nausea setting in, start chewing on fresh ginger. Ginger has the property of refreshing your senses. Roll down the windows so that you can get fresh air which will reduce the bad feeling. Sip on a cold of carbonated drink. Carbonated fizzy drinks reduce nausea and make you feel much better. Cold water and electrolyte solutions also help in eliminating the symptoms.
