How to Protect Your Skin While Gardening

While you spend hours taking care of your beloved plants to ensure they don’t lose their texture and colour, you ignore your own skin which requires protection from the sun’s rays, which can make you look older and promote wrinkling. In order to avoid this from happening you need to take some necessary steps to protect your skin and instead of searching for creams and medication it is suggested that you take preventive measures before the damage is done by keeping your skin covered against harsh weather.

The first thing which needs your attention is your clothing when you are out in the sun gardening. What you wear has a direct impact on your skin and you cannot protect it from the harmful rays of the sun if you leave it exposed.

When gardening, always wear full-sleeved shirts and pants, as this way your arms and legs will be covered against the heat and sun light.

  • 2

You need to give preference to tight clothing over loose-weave fabrics.

  • 3

Wearing a wide-brimmed hat is recommended for gardening, as it protects your face, neck and ears.

  • 4

You cannot forget your hands, and should wear gloves at all times when you are in the garden looking after your plants. Gloves also help in protecting your skin against thorns and insect bites.  You need to remember that the skin on the back of your hands is delicate and usually affected the most by sun light.

You need to garden either early in the morning or in the evening, avoid it during midday because that is when the heat is at its maximum and the sun right on your head. You need to be out when the sun isn’t that harsh and midday isn’t the right time for this at all.

  • 6

You can purchase UV-protective clothing which will help you protect your skin even when the sun is shining high.

  • 7

Do not spend too much time outdoors even on foggy or overcast days as UV exposure on these days can still cause skin damage.

  • 8

Wear sunblock whenever you go outside and continue to apply it on your exposed skin after every 20 to 30 minutes.

  • 9

Keep a water bottle or a juice bottle with you to prevent dehydration. You may not feel thirsty but since you will be working your body will require fluids.
