How to Rag Paint a Wall
If you are planning on adding warmth and a sense of detail to your room, you might want to texture the faux finishes with a rag instead of a paintbrush. While staying on a budget, you would be able to make your room look unique in a positive way using this interior designing technique.
Things Required:
– Drop cloths, plastic or canvas
– Bucket to mix the paint
– Paint sticks for stirring paint
– Masking tape to mask edges (low-tack)
– Latex paint for the base coat
– Latex paint in highlight color for rag painting
– Glaze (water-based)
– Cotton rags
Instructions
-
1
Start by removing furniture and all other objects from the room which you will be painting. If that is not possible for some reason, simply cover the items as well the floor of the room with a large enough drop cloth made out of plastic or canvas.
-
2
There may be some spots in the room which you would like to keep unpainted. Mask all such spots and edges with low-tack masking tape. This will protect the desired areas from paint splatters and brush edges.
-
3
Add latex paint for the base coat into a paint tray. Generally, the shade of the base coat paint is fairly light in order to make it easier for the glaze color to stand out on top of the base coat.
-
4
Cover all the walls you wish to paint with the base coat. Allow approximately 24 hours for the base coat to dry completely.
-
5
Prepare a mixture of water-based glaze and latex paint in high color for rag painting in a separate bucket. The water-based glaze would add sheen to the final finish as well as make the painted wall look soft. Use paint sticks for preparing a uniform mixture.
-
6
After the base coat is completely dry, it is time for you to apply the glaze paint. Take a rag, moisten it with water and then dip it into the glaze paint. Apply paint onto the wall in the desired pattern.
-
7
Allow enough time for the glaze paint to dry completely. In the meanwhile, wash all the equipment you used in the painting process. Take off the plastic or canvas drop cloth and then return any furniture or other items you had removed from the room.
